Vigorousness: A Unique Blend of Chinese and Modern Design

At the entrance of the house, Shun-Yuan Chang has created an image of Chinese arches using a grid design. This unique feature immediately sets the tone for the entire space, inviting visitors to explore further. The use of traditional Chinese hand-made bamboo weaving art combined with western ironwork craftsmanship adds a delicate humanistic touch to the ironwork, seen in the door screens and bookcase doors.

The space itself is designed to create a strong sense of openness and grandeur. The cabinets in the rooms have doors that are an impressive 2.9 meters high, perfectly complementing the 3-meter floor height of the house. This clever design choice enhances the overall spaciousness and adds to the grandeur of the Chinese-inspired elements.

Shun-Yuan Chang's attention to detail is evident in the realization of the design. The bamboo sticks are meticulously woven with cotton ropes at 3mm intervals. A titanium-plated stainless steel iron pipe is used as a frame, providing stability and structure to the braided bamboo screens and bookcase doors. The layering effect created by the geometric stacking of the braided bamboo frames adds depth and visual interest to the space.

This design project, spanning 280 square meters, was completed in October 2019 in Taipei, Taiwan. Shun-Yuan Chang faced several challenges during the creative process, particularly in replacing the traditional Chinese style of carved beams and painted rafters with a more vibrant and dynamic approach. Additionally, incorporating the magnificence of Chinese style within the constraints of Taiwan's apartment building floor height was a creative and technical challenge that was successfully overcome.

Shun-Yuan Chang's design is a testament to the harmonious blend of traditional Chinese culture and Western influences. By incorporating elements such as rattan's toughness, the boldness of woods, and the symbolic white marble representing China's landscapes, the design seamlessly combines Chinese and Western design concepts. The result is a living space that exudes both tranquility and vibrancy, creating a peaceful haven in the midst of a bustling city.

This remarkable design has been recognized for its excellence and innovation. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2020, in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate practicality, innovation, and adherence to professional and industrial standards. Shun-Yuan Chang's design truly embodies these qualities, contributing to a better world through its integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics.
